Skateboarding grinds are one of the most iconic tricks in skateboarding. Female Skateboarders Pushing Boundaries.I had one of those old Santa Cruz boards with the plastic liner on the bottom of the deck - it was better than bare wood but still not as good as rails. I did occasionally ride without rails too - I kindof liked the minimalist feel of it, but the grab/sliding advantage always brought me back to a brand new set of Schmitt Stix rails - those were my favorites. I even tried one rail right down the middle of the board - didn't work too well. Even back in the 80's, I occasionally did goofy shit like just one rail on one side. No one really did nose slides too much until the bi-directional/popsicle stick boards became popular and by that point, like you mentioned, all the extra stuff was dropped.īTW, I LOVE that modern boards are more or less symmetrical and that switch skating is a thing that people do (not a lot of people do it well though IMO).īut yeah, I'm keeping my rails. No one even dreamed of nose rails back in the day because noses were so short. I do remember seeing tail rails in the magazines but I never actually saw someone using them. Yes, it sucked when one or two of the bolts loosened and they started to rattle, but I always preferred the enhanced grab and sliding. Rails, while unnecessary, just made for a better ride IMO.
